Designed under the name Project Genesis. She was ordered in February 2006. Her keel was laid down on December 11, 2007 at the Aker Yards in Turku, Finland. In May 2008 she was named Oasis of the Seas after a contest was held to name the new ship. This is the first Oasis-class ship.
A major drydock happened Sep 22 to Nov 23, 2019. This was a $165 million refurbishment including adding Splashaway Bay aquapark for kids, adding daybeds to the pool area with hammocks and swing seats, adding new whirlpools. Adding three waterslides and the Ultimate Abyss dry slide. A portside BBQ added to the pool deck as well as a El Loco Fresh. The Music Hall was also added.
There are 2796 staterooms on board with the largest being the Royal Loft Suite.

This ship offers the Dreamworks Experience, which is themed programming in partnership with the Walt Disney Company. This includes meet and greets with characters and a character breakfast, themed games, and movie showings. Nightly entertainment can be found at the Opal Theater which offers grand productions, and the AquaTheatre which has water shows. There is a comedy club, and indoor skating rink which also has ice shows, a 2-deck high dancing lounge (Music Hall) with live music, a casino, a Latin lounge and bar, sports bar and arcade, and a disco club and lounge.
Children and teens will have plenty to do at their very own age-appropriate clubs and lounges, including the Adventure Science Lab, Imagination Studio, and Kids Avenue. Splashaway Bay is a family outdoor playground and waterpark with waterslides, splash pad, and water-play. Families will also enjoy time at the on board Escape Room, Playmakers arcade, the sports court with rock-climbing wall, Carousel, Golf Course, Zip Line, and the many waterslides and pool options.
The Perfect Storm is a 3-deck high waterslide complex, and the Ultimate Abyss is a 10-deck high waterslide, and the tallest slide at sea. There is also a vertical drop slide located in the Sports Zone pool.
Adults will enjoy some private time at the Solarium which is exclusive for adults and has a bar, pool, sundeck, and jacuzzis. There is also a spa and fitness center.
Central Park is an outdoor relaxation area with 20000+ live plants, and it features pathways and signage with detailed info on all of the plants.
In 2019, the retail space has also been enhanced and now features 8 shopping areas on 3 decks.
